Baseball Drills During COVID-19

For any baseball player missing out on action during the COVID-19 outbreak, not getting proper practice and game action can be very frustrating. Thankfully, the team sport can be practiced without all your teammates and can even be performed from your own house!

There is no need to miss out on practicing baseball just because some team activities or leagues may be limited. We are going to discuss four easy and fun drills that will keep your skills sharp and are able to be achieved from home!The Batting Net Drill

Where: An open space or Garage

What you Need:

  • Baseball Batting Net
  • Bucket of Baseball
  • Baseball Bat
  • Batting Tee

Just as you would warm up before a game begins, a batting net is a key way to keep your swing from getting rusty and to practice perfection. Major League Baseball players use a tee and a net before every game, before the first pitch and sometimes even between at-bats to work out kinks or slip-ups in their swings. The things you’ll want to focus on are swing level, proper mechanics, loading your hands, keeping your eye on the ball, and swinging through the strike zone. If there is a parent, sibling or friend around, you can even work on soft toss. This is where you lightly toss the ball from the size into the strike zone and swing away into the net. Practice makes perfect and consistent repetitions are an important part of a good swing.

Where: A backyard or open field

What you need:

  • Running Shoes
  • Athletic Shorts or Pants
  • Stretching Bands

At just about any stage, speed is an important part of the game. It can cause disruptions on the base paths, it will improve defense and keep a player in excellent shape throughout the season. We recommend running laps, doing footwork drills, running back and forth between cones and doing some light long-distance running. REMEMBER: Stretching thoroughly is so important when it comes to keeping your muscles healthy.

Where: Anywhere in front of a solid wall

What you need:

  • Baseball
  • Glove
  • A partner

This drill is best to practice with a partner unless you have a spare wall that you don’t mind getting beat up. In this drill, the player will get on their knees up against a wall and work on getting in front of the ball, getting their hands in front of the ball, as well as shorthops and backhands. This will create hand-eye coordination and will improve your abilities as an infielder. If you can’t find a partner, find a concrete wall somewhere and throw it against the wall, it works just as well.

What you need:

  • Balls
  • Tennis Shoes

In this easy drill you can set up three balls in a row and work on your footwork as you would field a ball. You could charge one ball head on, come across the field of plane and pick up another ball, or attack from the side. This will help with your footwork as ground balls come in so many different ways. You need no partner for this and can practice over and over again for great repetition.
